well one does not have to use quarkxpress, in order to leverage QPS. It now supports InD and InC as well.

the Quark sales guy showed my the IPhone task client they have for QPS and it blow me away how far QPS has come from the 3.5 version we had. k4 now looks old against this version 8 of QPS

I met with some folks from Quark today and was given a demo of QPS 8. Boy, what an improvement over QPS 3.5 (which worked with QXP 6.5). I can't comment about quality or actual use, but right now QPS looks like a much better product than QuarkXPress itself.

It has some features that K4 misses and misses some of K4 5.91 features (and K4 6 is due in a few months and will be a major upgrade). But Kudos to Quark for creating a new product with QPS 7 and building on it. It fixes so many of my complaints with QPS 3.5 while keeping good features and ideas. It is clearly well thought out and looks much easier to administer and much more secure. Many of the features I saw I now consider standard for workflow solutions but it also had, what I think are, unique features.

When I was comparing workflow products 3-4 years ago we ended up preferring the K4 interface over others, partly because of similarities between it and QPS.

But I saw other programs with good UI's that needed some work (and I suspect any of my complaints have been answered since then since the publishers seemed to be on the ball).

And in some cases the needs of newspapers vs. magazines are very different and a system designed for one might not work for the other.

K4's user interface may suck, but as a workflow management system it's a lot more robust than what ships natively with Adobe CS.

We have been using K4 for 3 years and love it. I've met many other people who moved to it from QPS and would never move back.

What do you dislike about K4?

I think that reaction does help the user. The K4 system does suck and I wouldnt wish it on anyone. I wouldnt go back to quark. Stick with InDesign, but dont consider buying this system. It is a lot of $$ for a lot of problems.
